Have been reading more and more about unjobbing.

I honestly do think I have an element of this in my life already with the commitments I have with regards to pregnancy & postnatal yoga, birth preparation classes and baby massage.   I don’t see them as work rather being a part of a mum to be’s pregnancy experience, a couples journey to parenthood and becoming a family and the bond between a parent and their baby/child. 

What would it take to get it to the next level? A huge amount of money – maybe not … just a jig of time and commitments. So starting from this week I am taking a different attitude to work and play. The children are important and it feels very much like a bed, work, bed routine rather than quality time together as a family.

So taking a pause, a breath and reassessing where I want to be.

Planning these events isn’t always plain sailing and can be an absolute headache but it always seems to come together like a well-oiled machine.  The lovely facilitators are always very organised and let you know well in advance what they require; the participants always bring something lovely & yummy to share when we do a shared-lunch event.  There’s a real community spirit within ”our” birth world and it’s very supportive, loving & giving. 

It’s always lovely to chat to new & more established Doulas about their experiences and I have been very lucky to be accepted as an assessor mentor for Doula UK.  It seems that there is always a path that finds you rather than you finding it.  A chance meeting, conversation or thought which inspires you to rethink where you are and how you would like things to be different.

My latest project is a Birth Professional Study day for a small group (15) in the beautiful setting of Tofte Manor in Bedfordshire.  The day should be very interesting as we focus on our own journey.  We spend such a small amount of time on “ourselves” in our busy, hectic, whirlwind lives.  So the opportunity to take a breather away from our everyday to somewhere for you to focus on “you” is such a luxury.  What better place than Tofte Manor, which is a beautiful estate tucked off the beaten path, where one can take time to chill, relax and explore.  We all deserve a little time like this and if you are interested in joining us then please request an information pack.  

I hope that I will be able to facilitate lots of wonderful days for birth professionals and that our community grows in strength and knowledge so that in turn we can support our clients and their families and ensure that they have positive, empowering birth experiences.

It makes clear the benefits of having continuous support from another woman in labour who is not a member of the hospital staff.
What is interesting is that the other statistically significant findings are about environment & access to epidural. We know that doulas routinely provide support from early labour, even during the latent phase, & can have a powerfully positive effect on the concrete environment and on how safe and secure the woman feels as she labours. However, the epidural question remains – how do women labour spontaneously and instinctively in a hospital environment when they know the an epidural is only a shout away?

Mummies Birth Buddy is based in Northampton, England and offers support to couples expecting a baby (babies).  The support offered ranges from birth preparation to birth & postnatal support.   Other services include pregnancy massage, baby massage classes and Birthing Lightly with Yoga classes.
